Lead Recycling

Lead Recycling

A large proportion of the lead used today serves the automobile industry in components such as storage batteries, radiators and solder for joints. Lead is an important part of chemical tank liners and of radiation shields in telephone and power cable conduit.

Lead is a main group element, present below tin, in Group 14 of the periodic table. It is used in roofing, construction, EV batteries, alloys, pigments, and much more.

In the past, lead was used extensively in the construction industry. In fact, according to the HUD report, more than 60% of buildings constructed before 1978, and a whopping 90% of buildings constructed before 1940, contained lead.

Sheathing and Insulation
Lead is commonly used as the most cost-effective stabiliser in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic, which covers electrical cords. Because of leads high density, lead is also used in high-voltage power cables as a sheathing material to prevent water diffusion into the insulation.

Roofing
Because of its water-resistive property, lead sheets are utilised in the construction sector for weathering, roofing and cladding, to prevent water penetration.
